Punjab's Amended Local Bodies Act Undemocratic | Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf

PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhary strongly criticized Punjab Government's recent undemocratic move to change the rules for upcoming local bodies elections. Sharif Brothers, the self-proclaimed democrats, through a recently promulgated ordinance has changed the law passed in provincial assembly and has created enough room for PML-N to manoeuvre the election results he added. He said with the new rules now local bodies elections will be held in two phases, first direct elections where voters will elect members on general seats; and second where the elected councilors will elect members on all other seats like youth, workers, minorities and females. The promulgated ordinance is against the basic principles and spirit of the democracy and reflects Sharif Brothers cheap mentality he added.

PTI leader Yasmin Rashid said what else could be expected from Sharif Brothers who rant about democracy but in fact are afraid to conduct local bodies election in a democratic way. Sharif Brothers are actually civil dictators; whenever they come into power they want public representatives to serve them like kings she added. She said it is always easier to manage elections on fewer seats than going for direct elections on all the seats and the entire nation knows Sharif Brothers are rigging experts. The amended ordinance will turn parts of upcoming local bodies election process into indirect form that is not only in violation of constitution but also against the true spirit of democracy she added.

PTI Information Secretary Andleeb Abbas said Shabaz Sharif during last seven years was running away from holding local bodies elections in the province. It was Supreme Court pressure that forced him to hold local bodies election and now he is using cheap tactics to hold the power she added. She said the nation could understand the pain of Sharif Brothers when it comes to delegating power. Earlier Sharif Brothers insisted for non-party based local bodies polls and PTI fought the case for masses and democracy. Now this twist of Sharif Brothers for indirectly electing the councilors of a union council is a clear violation of Article 140-A of the constitution she added. She said that voters should have the right to elect the candidates by exercising their democratic right. If the Punjab government did not revert the ordinance the PTI would seek the legal remedy against this undemocratic move of power hungry Sharif Brothers.
